Michael Gerling - Secretary

Mike Gerling is CLiF's Secretary. Mike received his B.S. in Applied
Economics and MBA in Finance from Cornell University. Following
several years as in the consulting and financial services industries,
Mike joined the Hanover firm Geographic Data Technology, Inc. in 1992
as their CFO. He became their President in 1994, and helped grow the
company to be a leader in the Digital Mapping industry with several
hundred employees. The company was sold to TeleAtlas, Inc. in 2004
and Mike became the COO of the North American operations for this
worldwide company. He retired in January of 2008 to focus his time on
a number of non-profit endeavors. In addition to CLiF, Mike serves
as President of the Northern Stage Board, on the Board of the
Montshire Museum, the Hanover Finance Committee, the DHMC Board of
Overseers, and the New Hampshire Public Radio Capital Campaign
Committee. He lives with his wife and two children in Hanover, NH.
Sonja Hakala

Sonja Hakala is a writer, editor, book designer, and quilt designer. She is the author of two books, American Patchwork: Quilters True Tales and Teach Yourself Visually: Quilting. Her third book on quilting, Visual Quick Tips: Quilting, will be out early in 2009. In addition to her books, Sonja is the writer of numerous articles for newspapers and magazines including the Boston Globe and the Old Farmer's Almanac, and has edited numerous books and magazines. She is a founding partner of the publishing company White River Press (www.whiteriverpress.com) and teaches workshops on the publishing process. Sonja is a founding board member of the Children's Literacy Foundation. She lives with her husband, Jay, in West Hartford, VT. You can reach Sonja through her Book Coach blog at www.sonjahakala.com.
Phil Kolvoord

Phil Kolvoord (Kolvoord, Overton & Wilson) is a retired attorney who started practice in 1956 in Essex Junction, Vermont. A product of the University of Virginia, he has been chairman of the Professional Conduct Board and the Judicial Selection Board of the Vermont Supreme Court. He grew up in a reading environment (father was an antiquarian book seller in Walpole, N.H.) and still collects books as a hobby along with beekeeping and occasional chess. He has pursued travel and has an interest in exploration (Harvard Travel Club-Explorer's Club). After a busy career in the law, Phil served for a number of years as president of the Children's Discovery Museum in Essex Junction until it merged with the Echo Center in Burlington. He has a keen interest in literacy among children. With two grown sons, three grandchildren, he lives with his wife of 44 years, Louise, in Essex Junction. He hopes to be able to contribute in a modest way to the outstanding work done to date by CLiF and its wonderful supporters.
Beth Healy

From 1997 to 2008 Beth Healy worked at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation where she led the creation of the Foundation’s Monadnock Region. Beth partnered with Monadnock-area donors and their professional advisors to build charitable capital for the region’s nonprofits. She recently joined MOCO Arts in Keene as their Director of Development. Beth was raised in New Jersey, worked in magazine publishing and did development for UNICEF, the United Nation’s Children’s Fund. She received her BA from Vassar College and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Beth currently lives in Harrisville and volunteers with Project LIFT Literacy Program. She has particular interest in mentoring programs and promoting empowerment of women. She also serves as an Incorporator for Monadnock Family Services.
Duncan McDougall

Duncan McDougall is the founder and Executive Director of the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF). Duncan has worked as a management consultant, freelance writer, teacher, and public radio commentator. He has written articles for many publications including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, and The Toronto Globe and Mail. Duncan has also been a commentator for New Hampshire Public Radio. Duncan graduated from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration in 1987 where he was awarded the Arnold F. Adams prize for Entrepreneurship. He then joined Mercer Management Consulting, a Boston-based international management consulting firm, where he was a partner specializing in marketing strategy. Duncan has had a lifelong interest in words, languages, and teaching. He enjoys linguistics, speaks French and Spanish, and has taught courses in Peru, in U.S. penitentiaries, and to Vietnamese refugees in Boston. Duncan served as a Director of Central Vermont Adult Basic Education. He is the past Chair of the Waterbury Conservation Commission and is active in supporting and managing local political and environmental campaigns. Marlene McGonigle

Marlene McGonigle retired in 2007 after fourteen years as Director of the Howe Library in Hanover. NH. Her formal education includes a B.A. from Miami (Ohio) University and an MLS from Rutgers University. Marlene raised three children in Chatham, NJ and moved to the Upper Valley in 1992. Married to Joseph Della Badia, they live in Meriden, NH and have a blended family of six children and 12 grandchildren. Marlene served as Head Media Coordinator in Hanover Park High School in NJ and as Director of the Kinnelon Public Library, also in New Jersey. In 1993 she worked at the Tuck School of Business Library at Dartmouth College and in 1994, became the Director of the Howe Library in Hanover. She is a mentor for “Everyone Wins”, a reading program at the White River Junction School, as well as being a member of the Montshire Corporation and the Howe Library Corporation. In 2008 Governor John Lynch appointed Marlene to the New Hampshire Library Advisory Board. She has been a member of the Hanover Rotary Club and served on its Board as Membership Chair for several years. Marlene’s interest in CLiF began in 1996 when Duncan and his parents visited Howe Library to explore the concept of improving children’s literacy in Vermont and New Hampshire.
Harry Nelson

Harry graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in history, and received an MBA from Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business. After a short tour in the Air Force, Harry worked with several financial services firms including Merrill Lynch, Salomon Brothers, Dean Witter, and Neuberger Berman. When he retired from Neuberger Berman he was General Partner managing individual and pension fund accounts. He is a voracious reader, and he writes his own blog on politics, finance and current events. He currently serves on the board of the Fleming Museum at UVM. He and his wife Sylvia live in Hanover, NH. They have three children.
Sylvia Nelson - Chairwoman

Sylvia grew up in Hanover, New Hampshire, received a BA from Vassar College, was married to Harry Nelson shortly thereafter, raised three children in New Jersey, and returned to Hanover (and her family's home) in1988. She has been a volunteer for a number of organizations, president of several of them, and now serves on the boards of the Hood Museum of Art and the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts at Dartmouth as well as the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont. Her interests include the Hanover Historical Society, Hanover's Howe Library, her alma mater, and of course the Children's Literacy Foundation.
Jason Patenaude - Treasurer

Jason Patenaude is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Carus Publishing Company, publisher of award-winning magazines and books for children. He earned an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 2003, and a BA from Bates College in 1991. Books and reading have always been a central part of his life. Jason spent a decade as a bookseller for moving into publishing, and he has been a frequent volunteer at various literacy organizations, including a wonderful summer as a CLiF intern back in 2002. Jason lives with his wife and daughter in southern New Hampshire.
